While the annual lantern making project takes place at the Shinnyo-En, it is an entirely non-religious activity, however, just making them seems spiritual. The lanterns are used every Memorial Day by thousands of residents and visitors alike to write messages to departed loved ones and then floated out into Ala Moana Beach. Knowing that we were making lanterns that someone will use for this purpose was also very inspirational. In addition, we were able to work with other members of the community. We hope the lanterns will make a difference for others.
