LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

11/22: LINKS OF THANKS!

Once again, our traditional Links of Thanks project yielded yards and yards of links with personal "thank you" messages from students.  The combined links from homerooms are displayed on the Senior Lounge railing in the cafeteria.  Next time you are in the cafeteria, check it out!

11/14: THE SHOW MUST GO ON!

This year's Mene Stars Talent Show got off to a rocky start with the gym's makai side bleachers refusing to open, but with a last minute Plan B (floor seating) and the patience of the junior and sophomore teachers and students, the Talent Show went on!  And what a great show it was!  This year's talented group of performers were so good that the judges had a really difficult time trying to pick the top two, but in the end, beatboxer Elijah Puchert grabbed the top spot and Temoananui Keith and her powerful rendition of "Man's World" came in second.  Thank you to all the performers, MC's Sili Coffin and Kylah Hughley, show advisor Duane Suyama, Talent Show Committee, and PA expert Gary Meyer for a job well done!  Congratulations to ALL the participants!

11/11: RESTORE RESTORES HUMANITY!

Did you know there is a store in Hawaii that takes donated tools and building supplies, fixes and/or cleans them and resells it to the public at a discount?  Well, the ReStore does just that!  This store is run by Habitat for Humanity and is located in Kalihi near Princess Kaiulani  Elementary School.  Besides tools and building supplies, they also accept furniture, books, and artwork.  Our task today was to help sort and display building supplies and paint as well as occasionally assisting customers.  In addition, we also received little background into what the store is all about and why Habitat for Humanity runs it.  his was a good way to spend a rainy Saturday morning!

Learning about the organization!

Getting tips on carrying loads!

So many cabinet knobs!

ALL this paint needs mixing?

Does this look "sellable?"

Job well done!

Friday

11/10: CB DAY DRAWS RECORD CROWD!

Veterans' Day is also traditionally Campus Beautification Day.  While most CB Days attract 150-200 volunteers, this year's event drew exactly 250 volunteers, the most since we started official sign in sheets, but the actual total is probably closer to 300 as there were two athletic teams who did projects but did not sign in.  Because there were so many volunteers, most of the tasks were completed before the end time of 10 a.m.  Tasks included repainting "No Loitering" stripes, classroom cleaning, landscaping, cafeteria window cleaning, gum scraping, litter pick-up, table and bench painting, recycle bin cleaning and of course, the traditional repainting of the "M's," in Mene Square and in front of the Student Center.  MANY THANKS go out to our administrative team who helped us gain access to various classrooms and buildings, the advisors of all participating grade levels and clubs, athletic team coaches for soccer, volleyball, and air riflery, and most importantly to all 250+ student volunteers who gave up part of their holiday to help beautify the school!  Thanks also to all organizations, alumni and individuals who donated refreshments and supplies!

Officers prepare to serve refreshments!

Picnic tables get a re-do!

Planter boxes are refreshed!

11/4: MOANALUA IS HAWAIIMOJI CHAMPION!

After weeks of texting logos, Moanalua wins the Hawaiimoji contest sponsored by Bank of Hawaii.  It was a tight race.  After we took a huge early lead, Waipahu started moving up fast, but we were able to hold them off and take the $10,000 prize!  Thank you to everyone who helped text our logo and helped support our athletic department.

Athletic Director Joel Kawachi (right) gladly accepts the check!
