LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

10/19: KOKUTAIJI RETURNS!

Once again, our sister school in Japan, Hiroshima Kokutaiji, made its annual trip to Hawaii.  Over 200 students and staff visited Moanalua for a day of fun activities, cultural exchange, and one-to-one conversation.  While English was difficult for the Kokutaiji students, Japanese was probably even more difficult for Moanalua students.  Still, the minor language barrier did not prevent fun interaction for all.  We wish them an awesome stay in Hawaii and a safe flight back home!  Many thanks to our World Language Department and Tateyama Sensei, Department Chair, in particular!

10/16: KOMEN KLEAN-UP KREW!

Our first official off-campus service project of the school year came a little late this year since the Okinawan Festival was canceled in early September.  Our task was to clean up after the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  This involved cleaning the race grounds of trash, clearing tents of merchandise and equipment, and hauling tables and chairs away.  At the very beginning, it even involved looking for a lost child.  The clean-up involved many other groups as well, so manpower was not and issue, and we even ended about an hour early!

10/7: LEADING THE WAY...FOR THE COMPLEX!

This year's Complex Leadership Conference centered on the theme, "Leading the Way!" which was originally based on a transportation concept, but we used that to focus on how high school leaders can lead the way for the younger leaders in the Moanalua Complex.  This year's conference inlcuded 115 participants from the five schools that eventually feed into Moanalua High School:  Moanalua Middle, Moanalua Elementary, Red Hill Elementary, Salt Lake Elementary and Shafter Elementary schools.  The day featured games, ice breakers end energizers, and various leadership workshops focused on growing or improving leadership skills.  Many thanks to the Executive Council who served as facilitators as well as the student council advisors from each school who helped supervise the entire day.  Good luck and best wishes to all the student leaders and hope that you can take what you learned back to your schools to help run your student councils!
