LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

10/30: HAPPY EARLY HALLOWEEN!

Well, as it happens this year, Halloween is on Saturday.  BUT, that doesn't stop us from celebrating on Friday the 30th!  Costumed students were everywhere!  This year's slate of events featured a costume contest through Period 4 classes, the winners of which was Ms. Mendoza's period 4; passing out of treats by the SA officers at recess, and what has now become the ANNUAL Honor Student Social after school where, if you are a 1st quarter honor roll student and you dress up, you receive a FREE ice cream sundae!  Check pictures of the day below!

10/18: SUPPORTING SUSAN G. KOMEN!

For the first time in five years, our student council returned to help at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.  The last time we participated we helped set-up the event.  This time, we were able to provide manpower at one of the water stations along the route.  In addition, we also cheered on the walkers-runners as they passed.  Thankfully, it was a beautiful day compared to the stormy night before.  Thanks also to all the officer volunteers who had to meet at 6:15 in the morning!

Getting ready to hit the course!

Hundreds of runners and walkers passed by the station!

We could barely make enough cups of water in time!

10/14: WELCOME HIROSHIMA KOKUTAIJI!

We welcomed our sister school, Hiroshima Kokutaiji, on its annual visit to Hawaii.  This year, over 240 students came to learn more about Hawaii and American school culture as well as have a chance to learn activities and converse with Moanalua students.  In the end, it was a mutual learning activity, and everyone had a great time just being with each other!  Thank you to Sensei Jaime Tateyama and the entire World Language Department for hosting this huge event!  Here are some scenes from the day!

10/9: CHILDREN AND YOUTH SPEAK OUT AT SUMMIT!

The annual Children and Youth Summit (CYS) provided a means for students and adults to voice concerns as well as provide suggestions on how to improve five topics:  Economy, Environment, Civil Rights, Health and Human Services, and of course, Education.  Suggestions were discussed and narrowed to the most popular for each topic, then submitted to the legislature for further discussion and possibly lead to bills, and finally laws.  The job of our officers today was to facilitate the discussions.  We sincerely hope that these suggestions do eventually improve our quality of life in Hawaii!

Ready to facilitate!

It's all about the economy!

Environmental concerns was a popular issue, too!

10/2: WE SUPPLY LEADERSHIP!

"We Supply Leadership!"  That was not only the Complex Conference theme this year, but also exactly what we did!  With almost 130 students from Moanalua Middle and Elementary, and Red Hill, Salt Lake and Shafter Elementary Schools ranging in age from 3rd to 8th grade, the Executive Council Officers provided ice breakers, energizers, games, workshops and team building skills all within a 6 hour day.  We hope that the students will be ale to use what they learned in order to improve the student councils at their own schools.  Thank you to the Executive Council and to all the student council advisors from each participating school!
