LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

10/31: HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS!

Halloween is a pretty big event at Moanalua and this year was no exception.  Starting off the day was the costume contest run through Period 4 classes.  The winning class was Mr. Ikenaga's Advanced Acting class!  Of course....ACTORS!  At morning recess, officers scoured the campus looking for those who are dressed up and offering a treat!  After school, all honor students who were dressed up received a FREE ice cream sundae!  Hope you all have a....

10/17: MOANALUA WELCOMES HIROSHIMA KOKUTAIJI!

Over 250 students and staff members from Hiroshima Kokutaiji made their annual visit to Moanalua today, even with looming tropical storm Ana approaching.  The students were treated to a day filled with conversation time, activities, lunch, and dancing, and in turn, the Hiroshima students also gave Moanalua students a taste of Japanese culture.  Even with the obvious language differences, students from both schools had no problem communicating.  Thank you to all Moanalua staff and students involved, but especially to event coordinator Sensei Cindy Wong who had everything running smoothly the entire day.

10/15: MENE STARS HOPEFULS SHARE TALENTS!

The Mene Stars Talent Show is over a month away, but try-outs took place today to give performers ample time to practice.  This year, because of a shortened assembly schedule, only the top eight move on to the show instead of the usual ten.  Fifteen acts tried out with talent ranging from guitar playing to hula; singing and dancing.  Thank you to ALL performers for trying out!  The eight finalists are pictured below in no particular order.

10/13: THANK YOU, CAFETERIA STAFF!

What can we say to the most awesome cafeteria staff in Hawaii schools?  As National School Lunch Week takes place this week, we would like to take a moment to say THANK YOU to our hard working cafeteria staff!  Most of us take for granted that every day we go to the cafeteria and food is ready, and we have a good selection as well, but someone behind the scenes makes it all happen, and that is our staff.  So this week, the SA Officers and Class Councils will each take a turn in honoring them, but we should all honor them every day of the week!

10/10: "YOUNG'UNS" HELP MAKE CYS A SUCCESS!

The annual Children and Youth Summit (CYS), a workshop to gather suggestions on major issues from Hawaii's youth was once again held at the State capitol.  The event, sponsored and run by Senator Suzanne Chun Oakland and Representative John Mizuno, brings together students from across the island to brainstorm suggestions for improvement on topics such as the economy, education, civil rights, environment and sustainability, and health and human services.  Ten facilitators from Moanalua ran the sessions which this year included three freshmen, three sophomores and a junior.  The sessions went off smoothly, and the young facilitators gained valuable leadership experience.  Hopefully, most of them will return to student government in the future! Thank you to all!

10/2: WE (S)CREAM FOR LEADERSHIP!

The annual Moanalua Complex Leadership Conference drew over 150 students from grades 3-8, learning leadership skills, and team building games, and meeting strategies, but equally important was just having fun and meeting students from other schools.  This year's theme, "I (S)Cream for Leadership," was also meant to be a fun, colorful and "sweet" way to get the message across.  We would like to thank all participating schools' administrations and advisors who support this event and show that student leadership is important to them and is a necessary part of their schools' programs.  In addition, thank you to the Moanalua High School SA officers who did a really good job with facilitating all the activities throughout the day.  They truly showed their leadership skills and... PATIENCE!
