LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

8/30: OKINAWAN FESTIVAL KICKS-OFF PROJECT SEASON!

Participating in the annual Okinawan Festival at Kapiolani Park has become someone of a traditional first service project of the year for Moanalua officers.  This year, 11 officers and 2 senators attended the event, manning the andagi booth from 8-12.  Being a traditional Okinawan dessert, andagi is very popular among fair-goers.  Besides working the front of the booth, others worked behind the scenes filling bags of andagi as soon as they came out of the fryers.  The booth was busy and the weather hot and humid, just like Okinawa this time of the year, but we all ended up with lunch and bags of andagi to take home!
Getting final instructions!

Working the front of the booth!  Andagi anyone?

And working the unglamorous back of the booth!

A pair of Shisa guard the entrance!

The Okinawan festival is always a colorful pageantry!

Tuesday

8/26: FALL RALLY FUN!

The Fall sports pep rally introduced seven of the eight fall sports (varsity and JV football is featured at Homecoming).  In addition to the sports team features, Principal Martin gave an informative quarterly report focusing on all the really GOOD things that our students have been doing on campus!  Finally. we had some time for a class competition featuring a preview of the trivia competition using the Homecoming theme:  "The Evolution of Music."  Congratulations to the seniors who walked away with that competition!

What is a pep rally without the band.....

8/25: MIDDLE SCHOOL LEADERS LEARN "IM!"

IM, or Interactive Method!  That was the topic for the annual Central District Intermediate Student Council (CDISC) training session held at Moanalua High School.  Student leaders from Moanalua, Mililani, Wheeler, Aiea and Aliamanu Middle Schools came together for a universal training in IM that will hopefully help them run meetings at their respective schools in the future.  Thank you to all the SACs from each school and especially to Moanalua Middle who hosted the event.  Also, thanks to all the high school officer volunteers!

Let's introduce ourselves!

Rushing to fill the People Bingo form!

So, what IS Interactive Method?

BOOM-chicka-boom!

8/22: WELCOME SURFRIDERS!

Leaders of Kailua High School and SAC Sheri Hanoa paid a visit to the Moanalua SA Room to observe and gather organization ideas for their own room.  But while they picked up a few tips, we are sure they can provide some ideas to us as well.  So, hopefully, we will be able to pay them a visit soon!  We hope you enjoyed your visit!

Welcome, Surfriders!

Thursday

8/21: FIRST SENATE MEETING CLEARS CONFUSION!

For some reason, this year's senate season started off in some confusion.  While today was the first meeting day, some thought it started this past Monday, an entire grade level thought it started last week Thursday, and a few showed up 20 minutes before the meeting because they were mistakenly released from class early.  Still, once the meeting started, much of the confusion was cleared.  Thank you to the SA Officers who ran it smoothly and to the patient library staff for granting senators an exception to the "No Eating" policy.  We look forward to the next meeting on September 4!

8/14: OPEN HOUSE CONFLICT DOES NOT DETER VOLUNTEERS!

Open House normally occurs during the second week of school and usually on a Wednesday evening.  This year, the decision was made to hold it on a Thursday evening in direct conflict with marching band practice.  While the band is on the field, there is the added parking crunch and noise.  Still, about 50 volunteers showed up to help serve as guides for parents who need help finding classes.  While this is only half of the usual number, it was still good enough to provide the necessary service.  Most surprisingly was that the freshmen who usually have the fewest volunteers, actually had the most this year!  Thank you to ALL the volunteers who came out to help!

8/7: THE "MENE" WIZARDS OF OZ!

Yes, Moanalua has MANY "wizards" available to help you be successful in school!  Administrators, counselors, teachers, and other support staff are always available to help students find their way!  Today's Welcome Back Assembly played off the Wizard of Oz story.  In our version, Dorothy is hesitant about going to high school for the first time, but through a dream journey to the Sapphire City (because sapphires are BLUE of course) on the blue brick road, she encounters others with problems, and they all go to see the wizard.  Instead of just giving them their wishes, the wise wizard helps them find their own way to success!  Sounds like school staff, huh?  Thank you to the 80+ participants and the cheerleaders and color guard for putting on a great show for all!

Teachers and students happy to be back!

8/4: WELCOME TO MOANALUA, FRESHIES!

Another new crop of students, the Class of 2018, has been initiated into the "Moanalua Way!"  Almost 500 students spent the day learning new rules, schedules, and the physical layout of the school through a campus tour.  They were also treated to an assembly where the executive council provided icebreakers and a skit on the "Top 10 Things for Freshmen to Avoid" like.....standing in the wrong lunch line!  So, welcome to Moanalua, Freshies!  We look forward to working together and domina.....uh, "friendly" Homecoming competitions!
