LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

4/26: ZOO PROJECT CONCENTRATES ON BEHIND THE SCENES ACTIVITIES!

At the zoo's educational program entrance ready to work!

Program Director Barbara gives us a few insights on the zoo's programs!

Cleaning coins was a tedious and dirty task, but SOMEONE has to do it!

Barbara demonstrates making the paper mache containers!

And we eagerly get to work!

Paper mache is a messy process which made it more fun!

The finished products!
The first thing one thinks about with a project at the zoo would be that it involves animals.  Well, our project today did not put us near the animals but indirectly helped them.  We actually did two major projects.  First, we cleaned coins tossed in the wishing well to prepare them for deposit to the bank.  The coins were caked with dirt, leaves and other debris, and our job was to clean them off in water and vinegar, dry them, then sort them by denomination.  Of course, the money goes back to cover zoo expenses.  Second, we made paper mache containers that will eventually hold things like feed for birds and other animals.  The reason the containers are paper mache is that it is non-toxic and biodegradable so no harm will come to the animals.  In the end, we did get to walk around the zoo and get our fill of animal sites and sights!  It was a great final personal project for the school year!

4/25: MAY DAY A SPECTACULAR SHOWCASE OF POLYNESIAN CULTURE!

They did it again!  Every year, the Polynesian Dance Club and Hawaiian Language classes put together a spectacular show for the student body under the direction of Kumu Claire Manutai.  This year's show featured authentic dance numbers from various Polynesian cultures including Hawaiian, Samoan, Tongan, Maori, and Tahitian, but there was also some "high-tech" involved.  The chanters and dancers also made use of remote microphones so that the audience could clearly hear everything being said.  It was a great new feature to an already outstanding show.  THANK YOU to all the performers and especially Kumu Manutai for entertaining and educating all of us every year!

4/22: LAST EXECUTIVE MEETING; NO TEARS, LOTS OF CHEER!

Back Row (l-r):  Jennifer Mead, Mark Meno, Carmen Rodriguez,
Lei Lily Tam, Justin Honda, and Jocelyn Yip.  Front Row (l-r,
holding cakes):  Eunica Escalante and Devin Soogrim.  ALOHA
SENIORS! (l-r, holding collages):  Jamie Hwang, Selena Li Fung,
Marlene Loui, Jessel Lyn Dela Cruz, and Jannah Lyn Dela Cruz.

The final executive council meeting was held today.  While the meeting was business as usual, the end was quite unique, possibly the start of a tradition?  The outgoing seniors presented the underclassmen with some treats including an ice cream cake, while the underclassmen created individual photo collages with farewell notes on the back for them to take to college next fall.  On behalf of the entire school, thank you to all the seniors for their service and, at times, sacrifices to make activities happen for all students at Moanalua!

4/5: WE ALL SCREAM FOR LEADERSHIP!

Just the beginning!

Giving it some serious thought!

Taking an all important vote!

Ready to hit Kalakaua Avenue looking "touristy!"

A great job was done by all!
I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream!  Well, it's a play on words, but that is just a hint of what our Leadership Conference will be!  That and other major activities such as the Welcome Back Assembly and Homecoming were all discussed this weekend at our annual Leadership Retreat, held this year at the Pacific Beach Hotel.  A total of 26 present and incoming officers and advisors met to discuss and plan the major events for the coming school year, and it was apparent that everyone was enthusiastic and excited about them and really cannot wait for the school year to start!  Much thanks to the Pacific Beach Hotel staff, the class advisors who gave up an evening with their families and to all the parents of officers who made the trek to Waikiki for pick-ups.  And of course, thank you to all the officers who really showed the spirit of cooperation and compromise in making final big decisions.  It was a lesson many adults could learn!
