LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

Sunday

3/30: LANTERN MAKING SPIRITUAL AND INSPIRATIONAL!

This is how to put them together!

Jannah and Jessel work to clean the lantern bases!

While Justin and Marlene place the frame on top!

Mark and Jamie also work on frames!

Jennifer and Eunica steady the bases!
Senior Selena gets to work with a senior!

L-R:  Selena, Mark, Eunica, Jennifer, Jamie, Marlene, and Justin.
(Missing:  Jannah and Jessel Dela Cruz who had to leave earlier.)
While the annual lantern making project takes place at the Shinnyo-En, it is an entirely non-religious activity, however, just making them seems spiritual.  The lanterns are used every Memorial Day by thousands of residents and visitors alike to write messages to departed loved ones and then floated out into Ala Moana Beach.  Knowing that we were making lanterns that someone will use for this purpose was also very inspirational.  In addition, we were able to work with other members of the community.  We hope the lanterns will make a difference for others.

Friday

3/28: FINAL RALLY HONORS SPRING TEAMS AND SCHOOL GROUPS!

Volleyball!

Baseball!

Water Polo!

Senior Class President Jessel Dela Cruz adds up kendama points for her team!
The Spring Assembly honored all teams participating in spring sports as well as recognition for award winning groups including DECA, Mock Trial, and Video.  The Mock Trial team in particular has won the State title for the past five years in a row!  Congratulations to them and to all award winners and athletic teams for their excellent representation of Moanalua at all games and matches.  The assembly ended on an interesting note with a kendama contest featuring students AND teachers!  Congratulations to the winning class, the Sophomores, who outlasted the Seniors by just two points:  229-227!

Wednesday

3/19: REVISED SECONDARY STUDENT CONFERENCE A WINNER!

Representative Linda Ichiyama meets with Moanalua delegates!

While Representative Aaron Johanson does the same for Radford delegates!

Senate Education Chair Jill Tokuda encourages delegates from all
over the state while reminiscing about her own SSC experiences!

Guest speaker Harriet Turk inspires and motivates the delegates!

Father Damien looks over the Moanalua delegates!
(L-R:  Sarah Preston, Michelle Park, Sohee Kim, Lei Lily Tam, Eunica Escalante,
Devin Soogrim, Ha Won Koo, Katelynn Romine, and Haley Addison.
This year's Secondary Student Conference (SSC) was revised in a shorter format, yet still provided delegates with legislative opportunities and a greater chance to meet personally with legislators from their own districts.  For Moanalua, its NINE delegates far outnumbered  the TWO we had for the entire previous decade!  The shorter time frame along with holding SSC during spring break really helped boost the delegate count.  Special thanks to Ms. Tiffany Frias, State Education Specialist, as well as our legislators:  Senators Jill Tokuda and Glenn Wakai, Repesentatives Linda Ichiyama and Aaron Johanson (both Moanalua alums), and all the chaperones!

3/12: SLEEPING OVER FOR OSCAR!

Watch movies...

talk....

socialize....

EAT!
It's that time of year again!  Time to take a moment out of our busy schedules to focus on completing our OSCAR (Outstanding Student Council Award Recognition) scrapbook.  While pages are assigned towards the end of the previous school year, we of course do not have the time to do all the pages once school starts.  So, at the end of the third quarter each year, we "sleep-over" in the SA Room where we are usually able to complete about 80% of the book.  Of course, there is one quarter of school and events left to go, but doing a quarter's worth of pages is a much less daunting task than to do everything from the beginning of the year!  Oh, we DO get to eat, watch movies, eat, talk, eat, socialize, and did we mention...eat?

3/12: GREEN DAY THE EVENT, NOT THE BAND!

Green Day Winners:  Mr. Achiu's Period 5!

Some of the officers get ready to pass out treats!

May I have TWO, please?

Devin finds a couple of students wearing green!
Each year, St. Patrick's Day falls during spring break, so we never really get to celebrate it.  Thus, on the final day of exams before the break, it's GREEN DAY!  Like Valentine's Day, there is a contest between Period 5 classes as well as officers giving treats during recess to anyone wearing green.  It's not quite as popular as Valentine's, but there were a good number of students participating.  Congratulations to Mr. Achiu's Period 5!

HAPPY GREEN DAY!

3/5: ROAR CONCLUDES AT SALT LAKE!

Eunica and Selena have them all lined up in a row!

Jamie, Jessel and Carmen ask students to pick their own story!

Thank you for the opportunity to read Salt Lake!
In what may have been the last Reach Out And Read session, we visited Salt Lake Elementary School.  It may be the last as next year, the school bell schedule does not allow us to be excused until much later in the day, meaning that by the time we are released, A+ will be close to ending.  Still, today was a great opportunity and, if it was the last time, we definitely ended on a high note.

Monday

3/3: NEXT STOP FOR ROAR AT SHAFTER!

Ohhh, Marlene took the book I wanted to read!

Lily captures the attention of her charges!

While Justin does the same with his!

Jennifer reads a Dr. Seuss classic as Jannah and Marlene look on!

Topping off a great day at Shafter!
Next stop for Reach Out And Read?  Shafter Elementary School!  While the Shafter A+ program is small, the unique thing we are able to do is read to ALL the participants!  It is quite a challenge to read to kindergarteners as well as 5th-6th graders!  The students were well behaved and very attentive!

Saturday

2/28: FUN AT THE HEALTH AND SAFETY FAIR!

These vendors sure have a LOT of stuff!

Let's demonstrate our line dancing skills!

After all the work and fun, we even get fed!

Birthday girl Selena gets some oxygen from Jannah
and an AED shock from Eunica at the EMS display!

WHEEL....OF....FORTUNE!!!
While this was supposed to be a service project, much of the time spent was also having fun at the annual Health and Safety Fair at St. Philomena Preschool.  Our task was to help set-up the fair and also assist vendors in bringing merchandise and equipment to their booth spaces.  A wide variety of food, games and presentations rounded out the events.  It is always great to have a service project where we can also have fun!
