LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

12/19: BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE!

The Grand Ballroom looks ready for the almost 600 guests!

Check in went smoothly thanks to teacher volunteers!

Choosing JUST the right picture pose, background and packet!

Mrs. Toyama's "final" dance!  She's in the middle somewhere!

Thank you, Mrs. Toyama (center)!
But, it was a lot warmer INSIDE the Pacific Beach Hotel's Grand Ballroom for our annual Winter Fantasy!  Once again, the event was a great success thanks to advisor Ms. Lori Mizue, chairpersons Devin Soogrim and Jackie Agena, and the entire WF Committee!  At the end, a special tribute was given for outgoing Vice Principal Julia Toyama who also served Moanalua as a Japanese Language teacher, SAC, and counselor.  Thank you for all that you've done for Moanalua, Mrs. Toyama!

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Monday

12/14: S.A. ASSISTS S.A.!

Receiving instructions on how to coax donations!

Getting ready to ring those bells!

Eunica and Devin watch the kettle carefully!

Jamie leads a round of Christmas carols!
That's right!  The Student Association (S.A.) officers spent Saturday morning assisting the Salvation Army (S.A.) with its holiday bell-ringing campaign.  We were stationed at the Salt Lake Safeway entrance for two hours. 9:00-11:00 a.m., collecting donations from customers as they exited the store.  Donations were a bit slow at first but an impromptu caroling session produced great results!  (Ms. B would be proud!)  Thank you to all the officers and people who chose to donate!

12/8: S.A. DINNER KICKS OFF THE HOLIDAY SEASON!

We're ready to GRIND!

Jamie opens her Secret Santa gift!

Everyone else wonders what it could be!
Well, the season kicked off for us anyway!  Our traditional officer dinner was a bit early this year, and we actually have two more service projects on December 13 and 14 before school gets out.  And of course, there's Winter Fantasy on December 19.  Nevertheless, we had a fun evening at Makino Chaya exchanging Secret Santa gifts, guessing the giver, and of course, eating until we could not take another bite.  On behalf of all the officers, Happy Holidays, spend your time off with family and friends, and see you in 2014!

Friday

12/6: WINTER RALLY SURPRISES!

Principal Martin breaks the VP news to the crowd!

Jessel gets ready to answer a trivia question for the seniors!
The winter pep rally began captains of all the athletic teams in season addressing the crowd and encouraging everyone to come out and support them.  Good luck to all winter sports teams!  Principal Martin then reported to a surprised crowd that vice principal Dawn Amano-Ige is leaving for Kanoelani Elementary School after two years (today is her last day) as well as long time teacher, SAC, counselor, and vice principal Julia Toyama.  Both will be missed, but especially Mrs. Toyama who has been at Moanalua for many years.  Good luck and best wishes to both!  Also recognized at the assembly were this semester's First Hawaiian Bank "Yes, You Can!" award winners:  Jessy Shiroma (12), Jackie Agena (11), Gina Watanabe (10), and Ainsley Soogrim (9).  Congratulations to all!  Finally, a class sports trivia competition saw the Junior class take first place.  Good job, Juniors!
