LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

Saturday

8/31: OKINAWAN FESTIVAL CLOSES OUT ACTIVITIES FOR AUGUST!

Ready to get to work near the volunteer booth!

These vendors sure have a lot of stuff!

Is this how we're supposed to wear these?

That's not REALLY cat litter, is it?

Selena assists a fair goer!
Haisai!  As the first month of school comes to an end, we spent the morning at the annual Okinawan Festival at Kapiolani Park.  Our jobs have varied in the past from manning game booths, to packing andagi, to taking surveys.  This year, we were tasked with helping vendors unload and assisting elderly passengers off the shuttle buses.  Aside from a couple of passing rain clouds, it was a beautiful day to be at the park experiencing Okinawan culture, music and food.  Now, let's get some chanpuru and pig's feet soup!!!  Mmmmmmm!

Friday

8/30: FALL RALLY FOCUSES ON TEAMS AND NEW RULES!

Color guard is ready as students file into the gym!

The 230+ Moanalua High School band fills the entire wrestling room!

Thomas Albaneze does a super job as the National Anthem guest singer!

Cheerleaders take the floor!
Of course, the Fall PEP Rally should focus on the fall sports athletes, and thanks to the very articulate team captains who did a great job on behalf of their teams, it did.  The captains proved that you CAN be an athlete and a scholar!  In addition, Principal Martin addressed the new rules on electronic devices that students wholeheartedly approved!  Finally, Ms. Botelho and Ms. Ota-Marcouiller were recognized for their outstanding work as advisor and teacher respectively.  Congratulations to them both!  Thanks also to the band and cheerleaders for always doing an awesome job at assemblies!

Tuesday

8/27: DISTRICT MIDDLE-SCHOOLERS MASTER I.M.

This is a "repeat after me" energizer!
Jannah, Mark and Marlene discuss the finer points of IM!

Selena and Jamie start the discussion!

Let's go over all of our choices!
Central District middle school leaders visited Moanalua to train in the interactive method (IM) of making decisions at meetings.  IM is a way of coming to a decision as a group but instead of straight voting where there are winners and losers, it gives everyone in the group a chance to contribute to the discussion and have a say in the final decision.  While it takes a little longer than a straight vote, the final decision is always one in which everyone in the group can "live with."  Moreover, it gives all the members in the group an opportunity to play different roles in the meeting process.  Thanks go out to members of the executive council and all of the advisors from each school.

Wednesday

Selena, Lily and Jocelyn are ready to assist parents!

Marlene is already on the job!

Parents listen intently at a session!

A total of sixty student volunteers showed up to serve as parent guides for Open House this evening; thirty-nine of whom were seniors.  Guides helped parents navigate their way on campus to find their children's classes quickly with only 5 minutes passing between sessions.  Thank you to all the student volunteers who helped make Open House successful once again!

Pika Pika!  What does that really mean, anyway?
The finale at morning rehearsal!
Over 100 students participated in this year's Welcome Back Assembly including 99 cast members and 20 cheerleaders.  Cast members this year included football players and other athletes, music students, committee chairs, officers, and just interested students wanting to help out.  Thanks especially to the officers for working on the script and supervising the rehearsals.  True leadership was demonstrated in making sure everyone else knew what to do and putting their own needs last.  We hope now that our message to get involved produces results from every student in our school!

Monday

8/5: HELPING FRESHMEN FIND THEIR WAY!

Carmen and Lily help a student find his class!

Parents ask Devin about registration procedures!

Cheerleaders get ready to welcome the freshmen!

Jamie, Selena, Mark and Jessel line the entrance to cheer on the freshmen!

Freshmen....over 500 strong!

Principal Martin give freshmen words of wisdom!
The first day of school can be scary for any age, but imagine being a freshman entering a school with 2000+ students, over 120 teachers, and being the YOUNGEST on top of that!  Freshman Orientation Day is a day set aside for freshmen only to alleviate some of that anxiety and they can have the campus to themselves.  It is a day full of information but hopefully, they can absorb most of it before joining everyone else on campus!  Thank you to the SA Executive Council for running the assembly and campus tour and to all the teachers and staff and cheerleading team for their help on this busy day!

Saturday

7/30-8/8: WBA REHEARSALS TOP 80 PARTICIPANTS!

Designing the main backdrop!

Part of the 80+ participants practice the finale!

Make sure the steps are correct!

Making props is actually more fun than the skit itself!
Over 80 students came out over their last precious days of summer to spend time rehearsing for the annual Welcome Back Assembly (WBA).  This year's theme is based on the animated movie, "Wreck It Ralph!"  While they could have been doing so many other tempting activities:  shopping, going to the beach, or just cruising with friends, they chose to spend a few hours each day practicing the dance finale, making props and painting scenery.  With all of that done, this year's WBA looks to be a huge success!  Hope everyone enjoys it on August 9!

Thursday

7/29: PLANNERS PREPARED FOR OPENING DAY!

Make sure the count is correct!

And...make sure it's alphabetized!

Distribution flies by in less than 30 minutes!
Planner Split Day!  It's an annual event where we take 2000+ student planners and divide them by homeroom counts for distribution on the first day of school.  It may seem like a relatively small activity but important so ensure that every student is offered a planner.  Thanks to all Executive Council members for making it a quick and "painless"  task!
