LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

Thursday

4/24: M.A.R.s WARs A VICTORY FOR THE LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA SOCIETY!

Counting those pennies is a tedious job!
Officers take the buckets out during lunch to collect donations!

Make sure you put PENNIES into the Moanalua bucket!
On the surface, it was a Penny War between Moanalua, Aiea, and Radford (MARs) High Schools and ultimately, the "War" was won by Aiea.  Congratulations, Na Ali'i!  But the real winner was the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) where the three schools agreed all donations would go.  All together, the combined school efforts raised $1029.26!  So, while the friendly competition was fun while it lasted, we all hope that the LLS can use the donation to further its cause!

FINAL RESULTS:
1st:  Aiea     -11600 points ($408.61 collected)
2nd:  Radford     -11884 points ($323.95 collected)
3rd:  Moanalua     -20548 points ($296.70 collected)

4/21: LANTERN MAKING A FUN AND EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE!

Paying close attention to the construction demonstration!
Ryan and Yoo Kyung (foreground) make sure everything is perfect!
Jessel, HaRim and Michelle get some last minute instructions!
(L-R):  Michael, Brooke, Michelle, HaRim, Yoo Kyung, Ryan, Rachel, Erica, Jamie, Jannah and Jessel
Last year at this time we helped make lanterns for the Lantern Floating Festival on Memorial Day at Ala Moana Beach Park.  Part of the fun was being able to do so with visiting Canadian students.  This year, the Canadians were not able to make the trip, but it still turned out to be a fun and educational experience!  We learned not only how to construct the lanterns but the significance of the festival and why it was so important to concentrate and do a good job on each one.  Speed was not the issue but rather careful thought and emotion.  Besides officers, many other volunteers came out to help.  Thank you to everyone who made a difference for this year's festival in May.

Tuesday

4/5: SPRING FOOD DRIVE SETS A NEW RECORD!

Students bring donations by the arm full!
And, they bring them by the CART full!
Vienna sausage and ramen rules!
Maybe it was the plea at the Spring Pep Rally, maybe it was the foodbank commercials on television, but whatever it was, students at Moanalua gave in abundance to the Spring Foodbank Food Drive!  While the most recent record for giving stood at just over 7000 items, this drive collected over 12,000 items!  The most popular item given seemed to be Vienna sausages and ramen, but there was a wide variety of everything else, as well as cash and check donations.  The competition results are as follows:

First Place:  SOPHOMORES     4300 items, 9.60/student
Second Place:  JUNIORS     4610 items, 8.99/student
Third Place:  SENIORS     2784 items, 5.35/student
Fourth Place:  FRESHMEN     627 items, 1.30/student
OVERALL COLLECTED (including 98 miscellaneous):  12,321 items!

INDIVIDUAL HOMEROOM WINNER:
Mr. Yoshizawa's Junior Homeroom     2088 items, 83.50/student

Sunday

4/5-6: S.A. PLANNING RETREAT IS A UNANIMOUS SUCCESS!

Taking a "temperature check" on a major issue:  "We can LIVE with it!"
The "NEWBIES" head out in Waikiki on a photo scavenger hunt...and lunch!
The "OLDIES" are well prepared with experience and an awesome camera!
THANK YOU to all officers for a successful planning retreat!
Each year, the present and incoming S.A. Executive Council get together to plan some of the major activities for the coming school year.  The idea is to get them to plan the themes and activities for events such as the Leadership Conferences, Welcome Back Assembly, and Homecoming and all the activities that go with them.  Using the Interactive Method (IM) meeting strategy, officers try to come to a consensus in all the final decisions made.  While we usually come close, we rarely have 100% agreement...until this year.  In all the major decisions, consensus was reached, so look forward to an exciting school year!  This year's planning retreat was held at the Doubletree Alana Waikiki Hotel.  Thank you to all participants for their hard work and spirit of cooperation and compromise!
