LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

3/28: SPRING PEP RALLY FEATURES NEW PRINCIPAL!

Mrs. Martin addresses the crowd as the new principal!
Track Team captains introduce the rest of the team!
Freshmen catch 2 out of 3 balls to WIN the class competition!
The Spring Pep Rally featured all members of participating spring sports plus the official introduction of Mrs. Robin Martin as Moanalua's new principal.  Mrs. Martin spent 7+ years as vice principal at Moanalua before becoming principal at Shafter Elementary School for the past four years.  So, WELCOME BACK "HOME," Mrs. Martin!  Of course, we also recognized all members of the baseball, golf, judo, softball, tennis, track, boys volleyball, and water polo teams!  Good luck to all in your remainder of the season!  Finally, in a class competition, congratulations to the FRESHMAN class for taking first place, followed by the juniors, sophomores, and seniors.

Wednesday

3/13: SLEEPOVER SECURES AT LEAST 90% OF OSCAR!

HaRim Koo (center) is flanked by incoming officers Eunica Escalante and Jocelyn Yip!
Dani, Devin and Erica (back) start work while Jamie and Brooke (front) take a snack break!
Ryan and Justin (back) get settled amongst the girls!
Pagemaking is well under way!
Our annual OSCAR Sleepover takes place on the last day of exams and runs until 7:00 a.m. the next morning.  At the sleepover, officers can concentrate on completing their share of OSCAR (Outstanding Student Council Award Recognition) pages, usually about 12-13 each.  At the same time, we share snacks, movies, music, and sleeping areas.  It's a nice way to bond, especially since incoming officers also attend and are mentored by the present officers.  OSCAR was once a competition between student councils from around the state, but it is now a participation event.  Still, we value the scrapbook because it is an important resource for future executive councils when they start planning for the year.

3/13: GREEN DAY A PREVIEW OF ST. PATRICK'S DAY!

Ms. Morikawa's Period 5 achieves 100% participation.....
.....but so does Ms. Goo's Period 5!  Congratulations to both!
Officers get ready to pass out treats to greenies!
Jamie gives away a package of Skittles.  He has green PANTS!
With the way the DOE calendar works, St. Patrick's Day rarely falls on a school day.  So, we celebrate GREEN Day!  Typically, GREEN Day is the last exam day which this year fell on March 13.  A period 5 dress-up competition kicked off the day with a TIE!  For the first time ever, two classes simultaneously sent their entries with both classes having 100% participation.  So, both classes won.  Congratulations to Ms. Goo's and Ms. Morikawa's spirited period 5 classes!  Then, at break, officers decked out in green spread out across campus to give treats to anyone also dressed in green.  It almost seemed like there were more people dressed out in green on this day than people dressed in red on Valentine's Day!  HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY, and HAPPY GREEN DAY!

Spirit Week was created five years ago to have an activity that boosts everyone's spirit during a traditionally "slow" period, the end of February.  This is long after the excitement of Homecoming has died, Winter Fantasy is over, the holidays are done, and just before prom season and of course, the end of the school year.  The week is filled with dress-up days, noon hour games, and the Powder-puff Tournament.  Except for the powder-puff games and a couple of dress-up days, the rest of the activities were apathetic at best in terms of participation.  Since no suggestions for a theme were given, the officers had to think up one themselves.  If this activity is to be continued, student input is needed!
