LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

2013 POWDER-PUFF CHAMPIONS:  SENIORS, CLASS OF 2013!
Last year, the Class of 2013 as Juniors upset the Seniors in the Powder-puff Championship game.  This year, they went in as tournament favorites and did not disappoint.  In a close game, the Class of 2013, now Seniors, defeated the Sophomores, 6-0.  The seniors returned most of their star players from the 2012 championship team.  One of the more interesting games was the Sophomore-Junior preliminary.  The game ended in regulation, 0-0.  So, by rule, each team attempts a field goal until one team misses, similar to penalty kicks in soccer.  The ball is also moved back a few yards if both teams are successful.  The Juniors made 5 of 7 to score 15 points, but behind the leg of Jennifer Mead, the Sophomores made 6 of 7 to win by 3.  Congratulations to the Seniors, Class of 2013 RE-peat champions!

PRELIMINARY ROUND
Seniors 13, Freshmen 0
Sophomores 18, Juniors 15 (6 OT)

CONSOLATION
Freshmen 8, Juniors 0

CHAMPIONSHIP

2/21: LAST VISIT FOR OGA-KAIYO!

Oga-Kaiyo Principal Masataka Kudo addresses the students!
Namahage demons create a huge noise with their drumming...
...then try to scare students into being GOOD!
A Moanalua host teaches Oga-Kaiyo students a craft!  Two female students are rare!
ALOHA AND SAYONARA!
Like many countries hit hard by a struggling economy, Japan is not unique.  Our regular visitors from Oga-Kaiyo Senior High School made their final visit today because the fishing vessel on which they sail to Hawaii is being decommissioned at the end of the year, and the government is not going to replace it.  Unfortunately, the fishing program will end, and so will their visits.  For the past 12 years, Oga-Kaiyo (f.k.a. Kaiyo-Gijutsu) visited Moanalua, and for the first 9 of those years, they would visit twice; once in October and once in March.  With help from Ashikaga Sensei and (Ms. Cindy) Wong Sensei, this year's final visit was great!  Lunch was provided, and an excellent cultural exchange occurred with Moanalua students teaching a craft, and Oga-Kaiyo students performing a traditional "Namahage"  blessing where demons try to scare young people into being good.  To our friends from Japan, a final "SAYONARA!"

2/14: FUTURE OFFICERS APPEAL TO THE CROWD!

AFJROTC Cadets get ready to kick off the Campaign Rally!
Candidates nervously prepare to give their speeches!
Rachel, Maddie and Krizchelle show the crowd how to vote!
SA Officer hopefuls gave their speeches at the annual campaign rally in front of students from grades 9-11.  Some were nervous, some were "naturals," but all gave compelling reasons why they should be elected!  This year required a Primary election to narrow candidates for president and HSSC representative from three to two.  In the end, however, the winning HSSC candidate received more than 50% of the vote and automatically moved on to the general.  This year also marked the first time that all students will vote for HSSC representative as well as SCC representative.  Good luck to all candidates!

2/14: WEAR RED DAY ACTIVITIES!

Officers screen and sort Happy Hearts for distribution on Valentine's Day!
Officers also made 240 Hershey kiss roses for every staff member!
Wear RED Day WINNER:  Ms. Judy Tateyama's Period 1!
(Didn't they also win Halloween Dress-up Day, too?)
Yes, it's Valentine's Day, but we call it Wear RED Day because the 14th does not always fall on a school day.  Anyway, we celebrated in many ways.  First, officers spread out at recess to offer treats to anyone dressed in at least 50% red.  The Period 1 class that had the highest percentage of students wearing red also won a prize.  This year's winner was Ms. Judy Tateyama's Period 1 Math class with 100% participation, including Ms. Tateyama and her TA!  Also, Happy Hearts were passed out in Period 1 classes.  Students wrote notes to their special someone or friends and delivered the hearts to the SA Room.  From there, officers screened the notes, sorted them, and issued them to teachers who then issued them to their Period 1 students.  Thank you, teachers, for your help!  Finally, to our wonderful staff, we made 240 Hershey kiss roses and distributed one to every staff member.

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

Monday

2/4: SA EXECUTIVE COUNCIL KICKS OF COUNSELORS' WEEK!

Officers prepare the no-bake cheesecakes Monday morning!
Adding the finishing touches before delivery!
Krizchelle and Taylor corner Ms. Yamamoto in the office!
Counselors' Week got off to a "sweet" start this year as the SA Executive Council officers presented each counselor with an individual mini cheesecake.  Each day of the week, one council presents something to all the counselors to show our appreciation for all the hard work that they do for the students.  THANK YOU COUNSELORS!!!

2/1: DRUG FREE ASSEMBLY-CAREER DAY A SUCCESS!

Student dancers entertain the crowd!
And the winner is.....some brave staff member!
Mene Stars Talent Show winners put on a "R.I.S.K.y" performance!
Speakers from many occupations shared their knowledge at Career Day!
The Bi-Annual Career Day activity is always coupled with the Drug Free Assembly and it was a great success.  Students were treated to entertainment by fellow classmates at the assembly as well as an inspirational speaker.  That was followed by an informative and well-organized Career Day, put on by the Counseling Staff.  The day concluded with an anti-bullying video and Links of Empowerment exercise where each student wrote a statement of what s/he will do to stop/prevent bullying or stay drug free.  This event is held once every two years.
