LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

10/20: A DAY AT PAPAHANA KUAOLA!

L-R:  Brooke Chinen, Rachel Tanoue, Erica Carlos, Maddie Nguyen,
Taylor May Lacar, Dani Hipol, and Ryan Matsumoto take a break!
At where?  Papahana Kuaola is a non-profit dedicated to restoring the native ecosystem and preserving Hawaii agricultural sites. This is a place to learn and to work.  Our project today was to help clear out invasive plants along He'eia Stream in Kaneohe.  While spending only a couple of hours, seven of us were able to clear out a substantial amount of plants crowding out native species.  Along with our officer group were a large number of other volunteer groups from younger children to adults.  It was a great learning experience!

Thursday

10/17: REGISTRATION NIGHT DRAWS A CROWD!

Principal Galera discusses GE procedures with parents.
Jannah points the way for a confused parent.
Ryan adds some animation in his directions!
A final group shot at the end of the night!  THANK YOU!!!
The annual Registration Night drew a capacity crowd in the cafeteria overflowing with families of incoming ninth graders as well as families of new or older students needing more information about registration.  On this night, SA Officers traditionally serve as guides for parents who need to find break out session rooms as well as man our own Student Activities booth to answer questions about co-curricular activities.  As one officer put it, they had to work harder than Open House night!

Wednesday

10/17: ASK ME!!!

Rachel persuades a classmate to donate food!
Jannah's listener looks a little skeptical!
Today was the first "Meet and Greet" for the year.  The topic was the upcoming Fall Food Drive from October 18 to November 15.  Students are encouraged to bring canned and dry foods to their CAP/Homeroom class.  It is a class competition but also an individual CAP/HR competition where the highest percentage of items per student wins!  If each students brings just ONE item, we will have over 2000 items!

Monday

10/15-19: NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH WEEK!

Menes!  It's National School Lunch Week!  Please take a moment this week to thank our hard working cafeteria staff.  Of course, they deserve our thanks every day but if you put it off all this time, then THIS IS THE WEEK to show your appreciation!  The SA and class councils will be presenting something every day to the staff this week!

Friday

10/12: FALL RALLY BOOSTS SPIRIT!

The flag and rifle teams rock out with the band!
Cheerleaders give a hint of what's to come at competitions!
Athletes are recognized for their efforts in the fall!
Advisor Karl Achiu (right) encourages the seniors before the competition!
But it's the Sophomores who proved victorious!
Just when you think Homecoming is over and spirit is dying, the Fall Pep Rally comes around to bring it back up!  The seven teams that participate in the fall were recognized:  Air Rifle, Bowling, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Soft Tennis, JV Softball and Volleyball.  Cheerleaders gave a preview of their upcoming competition routine, and the always awesome band was also featured as the annual Menehune Classic comes up as well as other marching competitions.  Principal Galera also gave the first quarter Principal's Report that featured important information about testing.  Finally, classes competed in an on-off t-shirt game using football jerseys instead to remind everyone to come to the play-off game.  Congratulations to the Sophomores who won that event!

Thursday

Learning American style dancing....
....and Hawaiian style, too!
For their annual visit to Moanalua, Hiroshima Kokutaiji brought almost 250 students, teachers, and administrators for a day of fun activities and cultural exchanges.  Kokutaiji students taught Moanalua students a dance, while Moanalua students returned the favors with dances of their own as well as games and songs.  Gifts were exchanged between schools as well as alma mater performances from both.  Everyone seemed to have fun and hopefully, the Japanese students will return to Japan with good memories from their visit!
