LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

8/21: OFFICERS HELP MIDDLE SCHOOLERS HOLD MORE INCLUSIVE MEETINGS!

Participants get ready for the IM workshop!
MoHSSA officer facilitators (clockwise from bottom left):  Jamie Hwang, Dani Hipol,
Devin Soogrim, Jannah Dela Cruz, Ryan Matsumoto, Brooke Chinen, and Rachel Tanoue.
Jannah guides middle schoolers in facilitating and recording.
Officers are appreciated after the workshop!
Seven executive council members volunteered to help train Central District middle school leaders in the Interactive Method (IM) of meeting.  IM is a meeting strategy that helps get ALL participants involved in a discussion rather than simply majority voting on issues.  Unlike traditional Parliamentary Procedure which is good for large groups, IM focuses on smaller groups of 25 or fewer, perfect for committees and student council officers.  About 60 participants were present, and each one got a taste of what IM is all about and in the end, came up with some great ideas for more inclusive school activities.

Friday

8/10: ALUMS GIVE SAGE ADVICE TO COLLEGE-BOUND MENES!

A group of nine Moanalua alumni gave current students a lot of excellent advice and stories of their experiences after a year or two of college, both in Hawaii and on the mainland.  Students from major mainland schools as well as fashion school and local community colleges gave important pointers to help students make their decision as to where to further their education upon graduation.  Thank you to Mrs. Mau and the College and Career Center for sponsoring this worthwhile event each year!

Thursday

8/8: OPEN HOUSE GETS SEVENTY VOLUNTEERS!

Seventy student volunteers came to help parents find their childrens' classrooms at the annual Open House on August 8.  Each year, student volunteers are asked to provide information for parents, many of whom were on campus for the first time.  Over half, or 38, were from the senior class who of course, by now, should know the campus very well.  Thank you to ALL volunteers who spent an evening making sure parents knew where to go!

Monday

8/3: WOODY, BUZZ AND JESSIE ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION!

The cast gets ready for the skit!
Lotso the Bear (a.k.a. David Enriquez)!
The crowd pays close attention!
Cheerleaders get involved!
"Club Members" give Lotso a BIG HUG!
Yes, you know them....the Toy Story gang!  At the Welcome Back Assembly, Woody, Buzz, Jessie, and a host of other characters helped urge students to get involved with co-curricular activities this school year!  Yes, there were the usual stereotypes, and we hope no one was offended, but it was all in fun, and the students did get the message.  So, stop by the SA Room (T4) for more information!  Thank you to all administration and staff members who also volunteered to chaperone our many activities.  Without them, we could not do anything!
