LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

Wednesday

(Top, l-r):  Wai Sam Lao, Kelly Zakimi, Haley Pendergast and Maddie Nguyen.
(Bottom:  Dani Hipol)
Maddie and Dani get the young 'uns....
....while Haley gets the older ones!
Reach Out And Read concluded with Shafter Elementary and long with that came the realization it was the last time for seniors Haley Pendergast, Wai Sam Lao and Kelly Zakimi, all of whom have been in executive council for 3-4 years.  With Shafter's A+ program being somewhat small, the officers read to ALL students.

2/28: POWDER-PUFF FOOTBALL HAS HARD HITTING ACTION!

Referee Mr. Paraso walks off a penalty!
Juniors get some expert coaching!
Seniors intercept a Sophomore pass!
....and the crowd went WILD!  (sort of...)
Juniors make some yardage against the Freshmen!
Seniors rush hard against the Sophomores!
Hard hitting action between the Juniors and Freshmen!
POWDER-PUFF CHAMPIONS:  CLASS OF 2013!
Yes, the Powder-puff Football Tournament was a FLAG football tournament, but that didn't mean there weren't a few "accidental" hits.  The girls on all four teams played hard, physical games but in the end, the Junior class took home the championship.  Congratulations to all teams.  The final results are:

PRELIMINARY ROUND
Seniors defeated Sophomores, 9-6 (FG, overtime)
Juniors defeated Freshmen, 19-13

CONSOLATION
Sophomores defeated Freshmen, 13-12

CHAMPIONSHIP
Juniors defeated Seniors, 6-4

Monday

2/27: ROAR TRAVELS TO SALT LAKE!

Salt Lake!  Home of the very attentive Dolphins!
Sydney, Taylor and Alyssa lead their group!
Erica, Daphne and Meshelle have all eyes on the reader!
The traveling Reach Out And Read activity moved to Salt Lake Elementary today.  Kindergartners were treated to the stories in a quiet setting in the playground.  Thankfully, the threatening rain never happened, and actually turned out to be a great day!

2/22: ALIAMANU GETS ITS TURN FOR ROAR!

Despite construction at Aliamanu, ROAR goes on!
Poor Daphne gets the "kolohe" bunch (some of them anyway).....
....while Rachel gets the "cute" bunch!
Aliamanu Elementary School was next up in line for Reach Out And Read.  Forty kindergarten and first graders participated.  Aliamanu is technically not a part of the Moanalua complex, however, a few of their students eventually enroll at Moanalua High School, so we want to make sure we cover ALL the elementary schools that have potential Menehune.

Wednesday

2/22: NHS BLOOD DRIVE ATTEMPTS TO REACH 100-PINT GOAL!

Blood Bank technicians draw blood from the many donors!
Principal Darrel Galera (background) donates blood and does business at the same time!
Each year, the National Honor Society sponsors a blood drive at Moanalua with the goal of reaching at least 100 pints.  This year, over 160 people signed up to donate blood and hopefully most will give and not be rejected as well.  Thank you to advisors Joanna Kobayashi and Chiyeon Hwang as well as the NHS students who made it all happen this year!

Thursday

2/16: CAMPAIGN RALLY HIGHLIGHTS ELECTION SEASON!

Present SA President Haley Pendergast MC's the rally while the candidates get ready for their speeches.  Seated from left to right are:  Rachel Tanoue and Dani Hipol (presidents), Kenesen Caba and Erica Carlos (vice presidents), Jannah Lynn Dela Cruz (recording secretary), Maddie Nguyen (corresponding secretary), and Krizchelle Magtoto (treasurer).
The annual S.A. Campaign Rally featured all seven candidates who would like to hold office for next school year.  Like last year, only two offices, president and vice president, have competition while three others are unopposed and a fourth, clerk, actually has NO candidate.  The problem is already solved, however, as both presidential candidates agreed that the losing candidate will be clerk.  As for the vice presidents, the losing candidate will become historian.  Thus, all seven are "guaranteed" to be on the executive council for next school year!

2/15: ROAR REACHES OUT TO RED HILL!

ROAR Readers (l-r):  Devin Soogrim, Jannah Lynn Dela Cruz, Jamie Hwang,
Dani Hipol, Alyssa Lagat-Ramos, Haley Pendergast, and Wai Sam Lao.
Another day, another in our series of ROAR activities!  This time, we traveled just up the street to Red Hill Elementary School where we actually read to a larger age group, K-3 instead of K-1.  Of course, the older children actually posed a few more challenges, but thanks to the group leaders and officers' patience, everything went smoothly.

Tuesday

2/14: WEAR RED DAY "DEFENDING CHAMPION!"

The WINNERS!  Ms. Karen Kramer's period 1 class wins the Wear Red Day dress-up with 100%!
Officers prepare to hit the campus giving treats to all who wore red!
Rachel surprises a classmate with a treat!
That's right, last year's Wear Red Day winner is once again the winner, and both times with 100% participation!  Congratulations to Karen Kramer's period 1 class!  Happy Valentine's Day to all!

2/13: ROAR KICKS-OFF AT MOANALUA ELEMENTARY!

Haley captures the kindergartners' attention!
Jannah and Devin appeal to the students with help from Dr. Seuss!
Kelly and Sydney get the older first graders!
(Top, l-r):  Meshelle Hirashima, Haley Pendergast, Sydney Miyashiro, and Erica Carlos.
(Bottom, l-r):  Jannah Lynn Dela Cruz, Devin Soogrim and Kelly Zakimi.
The first in a series of read-alouds kicked-off at Moanalua Elementary School.  Officer volunteers read to kindergarten and first-graders.  If you would like to join us, check out the "Coming Soon!" side bar next to the pictures!  You need to provide your own transportation, but it's a fun activity, and you get to work with the "little ones!"

Friday

2/10: DA BOMB COMES TO MOANALUA!

Students crowd the stage in anticipation of the next performer!
Sponsors support the message to stay DRUG FREE!
To promote Drug-Free month, the Peer Education Program sponsored what has now become an annual event, the noon-hour lunch mix with 102.7 Da Bomb and Music With a Message.  The event featured music and games, and spepcial performances.  But the main message is hopefully followed:  to stay DRUG FREE!

Monday

2/6-10: COUNSELORS' WEEK KICKS OFF!

Preparing blue and white cupcakes for delivery to counselors!
Taylor presents counselor Donna Yamamoto with a treat!
That's right Menes!  It's Counselors' Week!  And while we should be thankful everyday for the wonderful job that they do, this is the one special week where we regognize them above all others in the school.  Our Moanalua counselors are especially helpful and friendly, assisting with class changes, credit checks and of course, expert advice!  So, THANK YOU counselors for always being there when needed.  You are truly appreciated!

Friday

2/3: DRUG FREE ASSEMBLY SENDS A NEW MESSAGE!

Dance group "Supa Hot Fiya" gets the crowd excited!
Students from each grade play "Find the Ticket!"
The Drug Free Assembly of course attempts to send a message to students NOT to take illegal drugs, but today's assembly also featured a touching moment when Mrs. Tracy Ah Mook Sang spoke to the student body about how her daughter Makamae died of alcohol poisoning.  Most of us know the negative side effects of taking things like crystal meth or cocaine, but many do not know that simply drinking alcohol in large quantities over a short period of time can also kill.  Today's show also featured a lot of talented students and some fun games at the end.  Thank you to Ms. Wendy Botelho, PEP Coordinator and her PEP and Peer Education crew for putting on a great show!

Wednesday

1/31: VALENTINES TO TROOPS!

Haley and Alyssa write out cards with care!
Happy Valentines Day!
As part of a Central District Student Council project, officers got together to collect and construct Valentines' Day Cards that will be going to American troops overseas.  Over 250 cards were collected from the district schools.  Thank you to all who made one!
