LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

11/23: LINKS OF THANKS, PART II - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Happy Thanksgiving!  To celebrate the occasion, our "Links of Thanks" Project was finalized today as every link with a thank you message was hung in Mene Square.  Earlier in the morning, SA Officers took the links to the athletic field to measure, and the total length was 195 yards!  When hung in Mene Square, the links went from the cafeteria, all the way past Mene Square and stopped at the end of I-Building.  Go and see it when you can before the weather gets to it!  If you can't, check out the pictures above!

11/21: HOLIDAY DOOR DECORATING CONTEST WINNER!

WINNER:  H202 (Chavez)

F302
P8
F303
H303

Congratulations to Ms. Chavez's Period 1 class for winning the 2011 Holiday Door Decorating Contest!  All five entries were truly great but in the end, voters liked H202 best collecting over 60% of all votes cast!  The class wins a $25 cash prize.  Happy Holidays to all!

11/19: WHAT'S WET, SMELLS, AND IS VERY MUDDY? POUHALA MARSH!

Cleaning Pouhala Marsh!  It's not one of the most "fun" projects, but very necessary to the environment and something that must be done.  So, on an overcast Saturday morning, eight officers as well as two dozen members of the Science Club went out to clear cat-tails that are non-native but grow wild in the marsh, taking up valuable water space.  We spent most of the morning ankle (and sometimes knee-) deep in smelly mud clearing out the invasive plants.  Some temporarily lost a shoe.  But the task was completed and in the end, Hawaii Nature Center director Pauline Kawamata commented that the SA Officer GIRLS in particular worked really hard, and that she was pleasantly surprised to see that they could get down and dirty, too!

11/18: MES FUN FAIR BRINGS COMMUNITY TOGETHER!

The annual Moanalua Elementary School Fun Fair brings together community members as well as a large number of high school volunteers to help at the various booths and rides.  This year, Moanalua High School sent dozens of volunteers including a clean up crew!  SA Officers helped at various rides.  Pictured above are a few shots from the evening.

11/17: FOOD DRIVE TOPS LAST YEAR'S RESULTS!

OK, well last year wasn't a good one as we collected just under 2000 items, but this year, we beat that with 2418 items donated!  Anytime we can collect MORE than the previous year, it's a GOOD year!  Congratulations to the FRESHMAN class for donating the most items per student, and to Ms. Sablan's freshman homeroom for donating the most items per student of any other homeroom (pictured at bottom)!  Results are below:

Individual HR Winner:  L. Sablan's Freshman HR (481 items, 28.3/student)

11/11: CAMPUS BEAUTIFICATION A SUCCESS DESPITE WEATHER!

The day started out wet and rainy, but this did not deter the 150 (estimated) students and advisors that turned out for Campus Beautification Day.  The count is estimated since a couple of groups went straight to work and did not sign-in.  While certain outdoor projects obviously had to be postponed such as the repainting of the "M's" and picnic tables, almost all other projects went ahead including bench painting, litter pick-up, louver cleaning, window washing, gum scraping, and library pillar decorating.  Since the school was recently renovated, there were not a lot of MAJOR tasks to be done, but a few touch-ups never hurt.  Pictured above from top to bottom:  Litter is picked-up under the watchful eye of Ms. Ontai, G-courtyard benches are painted during a sunny break, seniors weed the planters by the cafeteria, juniors scrape gum from under cafeteria tables, and the art club prepares the Mene Square "M" for repainting at a later date.  (NOTE:  "M" Picture above was added on 11/21.)

11/10: WHO REALLY WON THE TALENT SHOW?

Well, according to the judges this morning, the winner was Chase Lihilihi and Ciera Lihilihi, but the reality is, there were so many great acts that the judges had a difficult time finding the top three places.  In fact, the top five scores were very close.  ANYBODY COULD HAVE WON!  But for the record, the Lihilihi sister-brother dance duo did place first (top photo), the dancing Buted brothers, Micaiah and Joshua placed second (second photo), and singer Niki Badua placed third (third photo).  Looks like it was a good year for siblings!  The other talented acts included the Giana Dickinson, Christine Falcon and Amber Kaholoa'a vocal and ukulele group; Tyler Ramos on piano; dancer Henry Harrison II; singers Patricia Mae Early, Elisha Miyahira, Niki Badua, and Lauren Cabrera; and dance quintet Alichka Basmayor, Lyle Cortez, Johser Jan Pacer, Kirk Urada, and Alexander Yi.  Congratulations to all participants and best wishes to the Lihilihi's in the State Brown Bags to Stardom finals!  A special thanks goes out to sponsor Chun Wah Kam and owners Steve and Sara Wong for generously donating the overall prize money of $600.00!  Look for today's show on OC16 in late November!

11/4-18: LINKS OF THANKS(GIVING)!

We do a LOT of class competitions at Moanalua which yield great results:  a fun Homecoming, spirited games and contests, charity drives that raise lots of money or whatever is being collected.  But sometimes, it is also good to have an activity that brings the whole school together, and that is the intent behind "Links of Thanks!"  The activity is simple.  Write a note of anything for which you are thankful on a construction paper slip, then the homeroom class links the slips together to form a chain.  Chains are brought back to the SA Room where the officers link all the chains together.  It took a long time to prepare, cutting 4000+ links (2 per person), but we ultimately hope to create a long paper chain to display before Thanksgiving.  We are also taking bets to see how long the chain will be by the due date, November 18, but if it is as successful for the remaining two weeks as it was just the first day, it will be a pretty long chain!.

Wednesday

11/2: MEET AND GREET!

So, what is a "Meet and Greet?"  It's the SA Executive Council's way of getting the message out about  an upcoming event as well as a way to meet students and get to know them as officers as well as fellow classmates.  Today's topic was the food drive.  More "Meet and Greets" will happen in the future, so be on the look out!
