LEADERSHIP: IT'S NOT ABOUT REWARDS; IT'S DOING WHAT IS RIGHT EVEN IF NO ONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGES YOU!

2022 MOANALUA HIGH SCHOOL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE (above) The Moanalua High School Executive Council is made up of fifteen volunteers. VOLUNTEERS! While officers are elected, they choose to run knowing that if they win, there is no physical reward, no letter grade, no incentive other than the pure satisfaction of doing a good job and representing the student body. At times, we achieve great success while at other times, we achieve somewhat less, but it is always a learning process. While we can take away much satisfaction from doing a good job, we can also learn from mistakes and try to better ourselves the next time. And so, at the end of our terms, while we do not earn a credit, a letter grade or even a certificate of achievement proving our accomplishments, we can take away the self-satisfaction in knowing that we did our best for the students, school and community, and that positive experience is something we can really use as contributing adult members of society.

Tuesday

8/23: CDISC gets IM from MOHSSA

So what's with the alphabet soup?  The title in full is simply:  Central District Intermediate Student Council gets Interactive Method training from the Moanalua High School Student Association!  That's a mouthful!  Anyway, three MoHSSA officers sacrificed their morning classes to help train Central District intermediate (middle school) leaders in the fine art of the interactive method of decision making.  This is a meeting style where everyone has input into the final decision.  About thirty were in attendance and hopefully, they can all take back the process to use in their own school decision making.

Wednesday

8/17: FIRST SENATE MEETING WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS!

The first senate meeting of the year was the usual introductory and informational meeting but also included an ice breaker (never done before), and welcomed about 40 new students to senate including all 23 freshmen.  President Haley Pendergast (above) ran it as if she has been doing so all year and, except for a few questions in the beginning, all senators were able to pick-up the system.  We are hoping for a good year with enthusiasm and dedication amongst all senators!

Thursday

8/11: ALUMNI RETURN TO SHARE EXPERIENCES

The annual Alumni Day featured 20 former Moanalua students sharing their college experiences with current students.  The two sessions allowed students to ask questions as well as hear presentations by each alum.  Hopefully, these sessions helped students make up their minds about college and where they might want to go.  Above, students hear what alums have to say, and Meghan Cadaoas (c/o 2010) talks about her experiences.

8/10: OPEN HOUSE BRINGS CLASSES TOGETHER TO HELP

Typically on Open House night, grade levels send students to help as volunteer guides for parents trying to find their children's classes.  This year, over 60 volunteers from various grades and AFJROTC showed up to accomplish this task.  Thank you to all volunteers who made it easier for parents.  At the top, Taylor May Lacar and junior friends help guide the way, and all volunteers pose for a group shot before heading out into the night.

Friday

8/5: HARRY POTTER WELCOMES A NEW YEAR

Wot?  Harry Potter?  (Say with a British accent).  That's right!  This year's Welcome Back Assembly featured a Harry Potter theme as he, Ron and Hermoine went on a quest to find the sorcerer's stone, hidden somewhere on campus.  Clubs, athletic teams, music department students, and officers all chipped in to help the trio find the stone that would lead them to success, and "defeated" the apathetic Lord Voldemort in the end by "killing" him with kindness.  Now that was better than anything you could have seen at the theater!  In addition, thanks to a summer President's Summit workshop, President Haley Pendergast also introduced three daily goals for the student body:  meet someone new, positively validate someone, and be thankful to others.  We think that will give students a great new attitude this school year.  Pictured above:  a Quidditch match commences, Ron plays a life sized chess match with help from the Chess Team, ethnic club members help the trio find the key to the trap door, and the crowd gets ready to sing the alma mater at the end.

Monday

8/1: WELCOME CLASS OF 2015!

Freshman Orientation Day!  Every student entering Moanalua High School as freshmen have gone through it and now, yet another class arrives!  WELCOME Class of 2015!  We hope that the next four years are filled with fun and great memories and, oh yes, a lot of learning as well.  Pictured above are just a few scenes from this busy day (top to bottom):  freshmen attempt an ice breaker, the campus tour follows the assembly.

7/27: HARRY POTTER 8?

You must have seen the last Harry Potter movie by now, but did you know there is actually ANOTHER installment of the series?  That's right, on Friday, August 5, the Welcome Back Assembly will feature Moanalua's own version!  Over the summer, officers and chairpeople meet to rehearse a skit for this assembly.  So, if you see a bunch of fellow students outside the SA Room dancing and speaking with British accents, you'll know why!
